Contents Preface

Landscape architects are stewards of the land who have a holistic approach to visual design and ecological diversity. Humanity is experiencing challenges of global scale (e.g. climate change). Consensus on wise actions and salient solutions can be even harder to reach as decision making practices become more multitired and inclusive.
Therefore, the potentials of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in facilitating participation in decision making is of extreme importance. Three evident benefits can already be mentioned: thematic networks, visualization, and virtuality. In this regard, thematic networks could help build critical masses of professional practitioners, professors and students of certain disciplines.
Visualization, not only in design competitions but even in planning decisions and policies, could enhance participation of stakeholders and make the decision making process more transparent, collaborative, and even enjoyable. Modeling and virtuality could help in making the issues landscape architects address less complex, by digitally testing, demonstrating and comparing effects of future designs and interventions.

These proceedings combine peer-reviewed contributions from the 10th International Conference on Information Technologies in Landscape Architecture, held in May, 2009 at Valletta, Malta and contributions from the 11th conference held from 26 to 30 May, 2010 at Aschersleben, near our Bernburg campus of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Germany.

Contributions to these proceedings come from leading landscape architectural firms as well as the research labs of University Programs in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning. The focus of these proceedings of the 10th and 11th International Conference on Digital Landscape Architecture held by the research group “Landschaftsinformatik” of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences are the following areas:
- Introduction, Geo Design and Landscape Information
- Models (LIMs)
- Knowledge-Based Landscape Architecture
- Digital Landscape Design for the Mediterranean
- Teaching Digital Landscape Architecture and New Media
- Applications in Landscape Architecture
- Landscape Visualization and Communication of Planning
- Visual Landscape Analysis
- Sustainable Landscape Modeling and Design

This conference series is organized by the research group “Landschaftsinformatik”
of Professor Erich Buhmann at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. An international and interdisciplinary scientific conference program committee is defining the further profile and concept of the Digital Landscape Architects Conference series. An even larger board of reviewers is guaranteed the scientific value of lectures and written contributions to the proceedings with peer reviewed contributions. The conference is a platform for the ECLAS Committee Digital Technology and experts in this field.
