Inhalt:
This paper analyzes the integration of renewable energy sources (RES) into the European electricity system up to 2030. The increasing electricity production from RES affects the residual load curve which can become negative in several hours. Considering this issue, the trade-off between storage and network expansions is analyzed with the help of the NTC-based European Electricity market model (ELTRAMOD). As a result the upgrading of the grid infrastructure dominates the construction of new pump-storage plants. In addition most of the fluctuation from RES feed-in is compensated by the conventional generation portfolio and interconnectors.
