Abstract:

We present the development of a synthetic aperture UWB FMCW radar system working in the GHz frequency range for localizing and imaging persons through a wall. The system involves a hardware part (RF transmitting and receiving part and an antenna array) and a software part processing data acquired at a certain distance from the wall able to obtain real time images of the scene behind the wall. A numerical study of the propagation of electromagnetic waves through walls has been carried out. Experimental results in realistic conditions are presented showing the performance of the system for localizing and imaging human targets behind a wall.
