Abstract:
A method for monitoring of passive optical networks using optical code-division multiplexing is proposed. Onedimensional temporal encoding as well as two-dimensional temporal and spectral encoding systems are proposed and their performance compared. The maximum number of users and outage probabilities of both systems are analytically derived. Temporal codes can only be used if the total number of subscribers is limited; otherwise 2D-codes provide better scaling.
