Abstract:
Semiconductor optical amplifiers enable a very simple set-up of Optical Network Unit configurations. Half-duplex or full-duplex transmission can be achieved depending on the selected modulation format and the multiplexing scheme. The straightforward technique is Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK) data modulation for both uplink and downlink transmission. Full-duplex can be performed by combining Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) for the downstream data with ASK for the upstream data or by subcarrier multiplexing downlink and uplink signals in the electrical domain (SCM). All these modulation formats have been tested to evaluate the transmission capabilities for simple passive WDM access networks. The results promise excellent performance measures.
