Dynamic bandwidth adaptation is a feasible solution to meet the requirements of IP and data traffic with high bandwidth dynamics in NG (Next Generation) - SDH, OTN/OTH and ASON/GMPLS based transport networks. In this paper we present the results of a performance analysis of dynamic bandwidth adaptation in TDM (time division multiplexing) based transport networks for packet oriented services. We describe the implementation of traffic shaping and bandwidth adjustment into a simulation tool. The traffic generation is based on the simulation of aggregated packet streams with different statistics. The performance of the dynamic network configuration is analyzed basing on simulations of a realistic multilayer network scenario and it is compared against the static provisioning of connection bandwidth. We have investigated the influence of different bandwidth predictors and the impact of different TDM connection granularities.
