Unequal error protection is an important feature regarding transport of multimedia data. The paper presents a novel approach for realising unequal error protection properties with multilevel codes, following the capacity design rule but adjusting the scheme to provide more unequal error protection than a multilevel coding scheme inherently provides. The flexibility of this approach is investigated regarding the freedom in the choice of unequal error protection profiles.
