Abstract:
The German space agency (DLR) is investigating the capabilities for a Lunar Exploration Orbiter (LEO) mission. The LEO will carry an entire suite of innovative, complementary instruments. One of them is a high resolution L-band SAR. It will be used not only for surface imaging but also get deeper information of the interior of the lunar regolith. Because of the extreme dry nature of the lunar surface even better penetration than observed with the L-band part of SIR-C/X-SAR is expected. In addition a nadir pointing mode shall be implemented for even deeper observation of obstructed targets or for observation of volume scattering processes.
