In this paper, the recently obtained numerical results are presented, which concern the mode competition scenarios in the pre-prototype 170-GHz gyrotron. They confirm the experimental mode sequence, which has been obtained at Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (FZK). The FZK theoretical mode sequence, which differs from the experimental one, can also be realized but at modified input parameters. In most cases, the working mode TE34,19 is dominant within the corresponding range of voltage variation, while the output power is about 2 MW. Several relevant effects have been considered allowing the better understanding of mode competition in the pre-prototype gyrotron.
