Qualification of a compact Ka-Band Switch Matrix for On-Orbit-Verification

We have developed a robust and compact reconfigurable switch matrix for satellite applications at Ka-band frequencies based on low-temperature cofired ceramics (LTCC) technology. The switch matrix is layed out in a single-pole multiple-throw architecture and incorporates integrated PIN-diode switch circuits. Promising performance is achieved for the input matching, insertion loss, and path isolation over the entire width of the passband of 5 GHz. Present activities aim at a complete space qualification for on-orbit verification, which is scheduled for 2010. The optimisation of the design and the assembly of the switch matrix address mainly the mechanical and thermal robustness. Measures undertaken to meet the thorough specifications include significant size reduction, lightweight hermetic sealing, and absorption of mechanical vibrations. The long-term perspectives of this project point to microwave modules with high functionality for on-board processing in future satellite systems.
