Abstract:
The EU project Moryne aims, at increasing traffic security by transmitting a real time video stream and other sensor data from a bus to the traffic control centre. One possibility is to use mobile WiMAX because it offers the ability of high data rates in a large scale broadband access system. Unfortunately no licences are available for the project’s demo site Berlin. Since Mobile WiMAX is still in a pilot phase the performance of such a system is not clear right now and it was decided to demonstrate the Mobile WiMAX capabilities by a Mobile WiMAX emulator during the Berlin demo. In order to emulate the WIMAX system performance we measured the IP performance in terms of packet loss and delay on a testbed in Ivrea, Italy. We measured the IP performance in an urban and suburban environment on different velocities. Our measurements pointed out that real time video is possible during the most of the time. Local bad connection qualities can be compensated by an adequate cache.
