Abstract:
This paper describes a prototype study on a novel multimedia service: a personalized, robust Mobile TV service with support for session mobility between mobile and wired (residential) IPTV environments. To offer such flexible video services in mobile scenarios, robustness and reliability is a key issue. Existing streaming solutions are not designed for mobile usage in challenging scenarios, and hence cannot provide an adequate user experience. We are describing a Mobile TV service that has specific support for sub-optimal network connectivity, taking disruptions and varying network characteristics into account. The system is based on the concept of personal viewing sessions that can be paused, continued and transferred to other personal devices, e.g. mobile terminals but also living-room set-top box in home environments.
