Abstract:
In today’s scientific and business environments the pervasive tracking and modification of sensor/actor data is essential for leveraging existing workflows to the demands of seamless, highly mobile, and/or rural scenarios. However, for embedded Web Services there is no single standardized mobile communication solution that overcomes all of the highly demanding obstacles like memory footprint, efficiency, and LAN/WAN connectivity issues at a time. In this paper a new architectural approach is presented that targets these obstacles through the combination of the multicast service discovery based Device Profile for Web Services (DPWS) stack and the highly efficient, connective, and low footprint Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technology JXTA. Consequently, it is shown through realistic measurements that this innovative approach actually outperforms existing SOAP based Web Services on embedded platforms being connected through narrow bandwidth cellular networks.
