Abstract:
News gathering or audio contribution typically means live bidirectional transmission of audio (and video) news between any location and the broadcasting center or studio. State-of-the-art technology uses wire-line or satellite transmissions for that purpose. To gain flexibility and mobility while contributing, connectivity via mobile radio networks as UMTS is demanded. Thus, to obtain wire-line equivalent quality of service, UMTS-CS (circuit switched) technology has to be used. 64 kbps CS-connections via UMTS and ISDN using many different terminals were established and evaluated. End-to-end latency does not exceed 170 ms (incl. G.711 audio coding). Furthermore, mobile packet switched connectivity using UMTS-PS and EDGE and wireless packet switched connectivity via WLAN 802.11n and WIMAX are realized and evaluated as well.
