Abstract:
Optical wireless communications present a promising supplemental technology to radio wireless systems in short-range applications. We show that the implementation of advanced signal processing provides both high spatial coverage and bit rates above 100 Mb/s in infrared wireless links, while allowing simple optical components and avoiding pointing and tracking mechanisms in the system. Colour LEDs are already prevalent in signalling applications, while the white LEDs present a major candidate for future general illumination. Visible light communications consider simultaneous modulation of these LEDs and thus offer an additional service at comparably low cost. We demonstrated transmission rates of hundreds of Mb/s at illumination levels recommended by the standards for working environment.
