Abstract:
In this paper we discuss the performance of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service over High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) networks. Important implementation issues are discussed, and performance results generated by a dynamic network simulation tool are provided. The investigations are done in an environment mixing VoIP and background FTP services, where a trade-off is observed between maximum throughput of the best effort FTP service, and minimum latency of the delay sensitive VoIP service. For HSDPA a modified FIFO scheduler is the best solution among the analyzed schemes. On EDCH, non-scheduled transmission is used. The impact of some specific parameter settings is shown. Finally, performance improvements especially designed by 3GPP to support voice services more efficiently, are discussed and their gain is analyzed.
