Future requirements and concepts of power electronics in HEV/EV from the view of Tier-1 supplier for the European market

Abstract:
This paper gives firstly an overview on the challenges, future requirements, trends of power electronics (inverter, DC/DC-converter and On-board-Charger) and electric motor for the European OEMs from the view of Magna Electronics, as a European tier-1 supplier. The Magna Electronics approach to reach a balanced scorecard of cost, packaging, power-density, efficiency and life cycle is highlighted. A module based platform design to reach various grades of electrification from Mild-Hybrid, Full-Hybrid to Plug-in Hybrid and Electric Vehicles, while fulfilling the different requirements of European OEMs is discussed. Electric/Electronic-architectures of the power electronics and electric motor from the view of Magna Electronics, as a tier-1 for the European market are discussed in this paper as well.
