Abstract:
Butt-joint integration of InP based laser structures with monomode polymer waveguides was studied. Using curved-stripe laser diodes coupling losses as low as 3 dB and excellent single-mode behaviour was obtained. Operation in a PLC type transceiver will be demonstrated. To extend to a "colourless" transceiver, thermo-optically tunable waveguide grating lasers employing a BH type laser gain chip and sidewall-corrugated gratings were investigated. Threshold current and optical output power of around 10 mA and 15 mW (at 100 mA) were achieved. Single-side mode suppression could be kept below the -45 dB level. Wavelength tuning was accomplished over some 20 nm in the C-band range.
