Resistive field grading, i.e., the mitigation of electric field enhancements with the help of nonlinearly conductive materials, attracted enhanced attention during the past decade because of significant progress in material development, which resulted in higher electrical nonlinearities. This article summarizes the background and the basic knowledge required to apply resistive field grading in the development and the optimization of MV and HV devices.
