Abstract:
In the planned Super Grid, and in the future Smart Grids a great emphasis will be given to reliability, CO2 reduction and grid stability. A key element to guarantee the grid reliability is the robust design of HVAC and HVDC joints. The use of FEM driven design is hereby described with a real example. The improved design of a 300 kV unified design joint, to be successfully utilized for both HVAC and HVDC grid links is shown too. The advantages in terms of grid reliability and availability of dispatch are discussed as well as the differences between HVAC and HVDC transmission.
