Abstract:
In this paper we consider two aspects connected with the interpretation problem of radar images of coniferous forest: i.e., calibration and wood permittivity. The article shows the possibility of calibrating VHF-band SAR by using pylon support structures of power lines. In addition, when comparing the theoretical and experimental data it is important to know the dielectric properties of the mixture of elements in a tree. The method of measuring the dielectric permittivity of living wood is also presented. It is based on measuring the SWR of an antenna which is placed inside the trunk. It is shown that the dielectric properties of living wood are different from the dielectric properties of wood samples that were measured in the laboratory.
