In this paper we discuss the design of a ground-based Radar for imaging the vertical structure of the vegetation layer. The system is to be realized by connecting a VNA to multiple antennas through a switchbox, which allows to use any of them either as transmitter or receiver. The system is mainly intended to operate at 500 MHz. Yet imaging at higher frequencies is considered as well. A fundamental constraint in the design of such a system is the one concerning the minimum distance between nearby antennas required to avoid coupling effects. This leads to the height ambiguity appearing as a serious problem. In this paper, we discuss a multi-static configuration design which solves this problem based on the concept of virtual array.
