Abstract:
This paper focuses on the smart grid applications and system structure to provide better efficiency and reliability at the distribution system level. System efficiency is improved by reducing reactive power losses and managing voltages on distribution feeders. System reliability is improved by implementing self-healing technology that uses fault detection, isolation, and restoration (FDIR) capabilities to significantly limit the impact of distribution outages. System structure includes enabling information technology, advanced software applications, communications, intelligent controllers, and devices on the feeders. Examples of projects at CenterPoint Energy and Oklahoma Gas & Electric are presented.
