Abstract:
Despite the slow growth of the worldwide optical access markets new system generations continue to be developed, not only to increase the bandwidth for users, but also to ease support different services as well as new network architectures. Supervision and management of the optical layer - fiber infrastructure, intermediate nodes and line equipment - are increasingly becoming important factors in the operation of access networks, eventually transforming the optical layer into a managed entity of its own. Open networks, extended transparently across the access and metro space, will help make the business case for fiber networks more attractive and will ease deploy multiple different ser-vices from different operators or clients on a common infrastructure.
