Abstract:
The novel 3-dimensional modulation format 3D-Simplex offers potentially 1.2 dB higher OSNR tolerance than DPDPSK while exhibiting the same spectral occupancy, modulating two bits per symbol. We verify this benefit experimentally and evaluate the transmission performance in a non-linear environment. All experimental results are confirmed by simulations. The benefit of 3D-Simplex is not maintained in the highly non-linear regime, but the performance is still comparable to that of DP-DPSK.
