Abstract:
In order to achieve higher energy efficiency under strict bandwidth constraint, the use of linear modulations that have higher mutual information with lower signal peak power is necessary. In principle, however, there is a trade-off between bandwidth and peak power efficiencies. In this work, through the analysis of energy efficiency of several linear modulation formats with fixed bandwidth constraint, we investigate the constellation format that minimizes the required energy for a given target information rate considering the resulting mutual information and signal peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR).
