Abstract:
Sensors are embedded in virtually every smartphone sold in the last years. These sensors give the devices the ability to record data about motion, orientation and ambient light among other things. This is a preliminary study carrying a practical exploration of sensor-based activity monitoring using legacy mobile technology. This work aims to set the basis for further development in the domain of sensor-based applications for activity monitoring in general and elderly care in particular by providing an affordable and easy way for researchers and designers to rapidly sketch out their applications using readily available hardware and web development tools. This paper illustrates how such technologies can be used in creative exploration, short-term data collection and fast prototyping of interactive sensor-based solutions.
