Abstract:
In this paper we report on three studies on an ambient light display for use in a multimodal household reminder system. We tried to determine users’ colour preferences for categories, perceived urgency and obtrusiveness of 30 light patterns as well as suitable illumination levels for varying environmental lighting situations. Our results suggest that sinewave like light patterns are perceived as calm and unobtrusive, while regularly alternating square changes cause feelings of urgency with an acceptable level of obtrusiveness.
