Abstract:
The G.989 series of ITU-T Recommendations describes the latest generation of passive optical networks, NG-PON2. NGPON2 is based on wavelength-domain multiplexing. It comprises channel pairs which also use time-domain multiple access as well as dedicated, point-to-point channel pairs. NG-PON2 variants can differ in channel bit rates, passive reach, usable wavelength ranges, and also with regard to several implementation options. Due to the required performance of NG-PON2, and its backward compatibility with G-PON and XG-PON1, some challenges had to be solved with regard to the NG-PON2 physical layer. However, this also ensured that NG-PON2 can be used for all sort of access, backhaul and fronthaul applications.
