Abstract:
Fibre Bragg gratings (FBG) are the only strain sensors nowadays which provide multiplexing capability, immunity to electromagnetic fields and safe operation in explosive media. In recent years, several companies have developed and brought to market sensor patches where the FBGs are mounted in a dedicated housing. The patches, which simplify the application and maintenance of the sensors, introduce new parameters in the calibration of the FBG sensors which will be demonstrated are relevant for the final accuracy specifications. In this study, the strain sensitivities of different types of FBG strain sensors were determined experimentally. A facility compliant with the VDI/VDE German guideline for optical strain sensors was used. The measured strain sensitivities of the optical strain sensors were compared with each other and with strain sensitivities of FBGs in bare fibres that had been determined earlier. Accuracy aspects were investigated and discussed in detail.
