Abstract:
Initial production evaluations of a new Umicore cyanide free high speed reel to reel AgPd electroplating process has been done at TE Connectivity for a variety of connector applications. Various contact systems were produced with intention of being able to perform product level testing across a wide variety of qualification requirements. This finish has both the potential to be able to perform as a higher performance, higher temperature capable, standard Ag alternative: as well as a reduced cost Au and Au flashed PdNi alternative finish for applications across the connector industry. The stable nanocrystalline hard qualities of this AgPd electrodeposit impart an improved durability as compared to standard Ag finishes; comparable to hard Au and Au flashed PdNi. It will still have a tendency to tarnish, as standard Ag does, but at an attenuated rate. This AgPd could be used in durability and temperature applications where standard Ag finishes are limited. Though it is not ‘gold’ per se, by using additional contact design techniques, the ‘less than noble’ characteristics of this new AgPd alloy can be mitigated to make it a viable reduced cost alternative for many traditionally Au finish applications.
