Fiber-optic transmission systems are studied where linear distortions due to chromatic dispersion are dominant. We give an overview on the theoretical performance of linear equalization and decision-feedback equalization, both for coherent schemes and those employing direct detection. Moreover, the use of lattice-reduction-aided equalization is discussed and assessed. Its advantages over the classical schemes are enlightened.
