Abstract:
Fiber To The Home (FTTH) architectures offer the most future proof access network solution. However, a lot of operators prefer deployment schemes which avoid physical changes to the subscriber premises such as the hybrid Fiber To The distribution point (FTTdp) architecture with its short copper line lengths and high available data rates. One reason for that are civil engineering costs and coordination needs that are especially high for the last tens of meters to the subscribers. The usage of single-port FTTdp micro-nodes or distribution point units (DPUs) in cases with especially high costs or coordination needs can substantially reduce the implementation time and costs of FTTH networks. We present the technological characteristics of singe-port distribution point units and the feasibility of their usage as fallback option in FTTH deployments.
