Abstract:
For the application of optical data transmission over shorter range multimode fibres the following aspects become defining as data rates increase: The channel (optoelectronics and fibre) shows dispersion and/or other bandwidth-limiting effects, which makes some form of equalization necessary. Power-efficiency of the data transmission system also plays a major role. The technical objective therefore is to find an SNR-optimal equalizer configuration. This is achieved by using a system analysis approach. Different topologies and parameterizations are evaluated regarding their achievable bit error rate based on transmission channel measurements and models. It is furthermore the objective to investigate the analogue/digital domain partitioning for the minimization of power-consumption to achieve an efficient implementation. Specifically, signal processing functions will be compared across domains at same overall performance, which allows for power consumption evaluation on equal grounds.
