Abstract:
Kompsat-5 (K5), the first Korean SAR satellite launched on August 22, 2013, has capability to provide X-band SAR interferometry (InSAR) with up to 1 m resolution. The quality of K5 SAR images has been greatly improved through a series of SAR processor upgrades and calibration activities. Four additional imaging modes have been added to have better resolution compared to existing modes. The capability and performance of K5 InSAR have been also improved according to the enhanced quality of SAR images. Kompsat-6 (K6), which will be launched on August 2019, will support interferometry operation as a baseline mission. K6 will have improved InSAR capability compared to K5 due to optimally designed system parameters for the interferometry operation. In this paper, the results of K5 InSAR quality check are reported and K6 parameters related to InSAR performance are described. The quality of K5 InSAR has been assessed with SAR images acquired through special InSAR test operations based on K5 orbit control with 28 days of repeat ground track within +/- 2 km and +/- 1 km, respectively. It has been shown that highly coherent K5 InSAR can be successfully generated from SAR images both with existing and new modes, and the high spatial resolution DEM can be also generated from the K5 InSAR.
