Abstract:
To evaluate the reliability of wind vector retrieving depending on recently released Sentinel-1A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite, wind direction is extracted from the Sentinel-1A SAR images using local gradient (LG) method. Then wind speed is calculated using the geophysical model function (GMF) CMOD4. The retrieved wind vectors show a close agreement with WindSat winds at 25km resolution with a direction root mean square error (RMSE) of 17.61o and a speed RMSE of 1.65 m/s. The contrast with coastal in situ buoy measurements at 1.25km resolution shows a direction RMSE of 44.27o and a speed RMSE of 1.62 m/s.
