Abstract:
This paper discusses the repercussions of multiple scattering, layer penetration, and elastic effects on images of objects formed using a backscattering synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) system. Multiple scattering occurs when sound scattered by an object is re-scattered by another object before reception, leading to the appearance of additional objects in the reconstructed images. At lower frequencies sound can penetrate thin shelled objects and scatter from the internal structure or opposite side of the object. Elastic effects such as surface elastic waves may also contribute to backscattering. These mechanisms may all remain focused in reconstructed images, dependent on the reconstruction method.
