This paper reports a complete transmission system for next generation high speed optical communications targeting short reach applications such as access networks and data-center interconnects. It consists of a 63-GHz DFB-EAM transmitter and a SOA-PIN-TIA receiver with -23.5-dBm sensitivity at a bit error rate (BER) of 10-9 at 64 Gb/s in non-return-to-zero (NRZ) on-off-keying (OOK) operation. The system yields less than 0.5 dB penalty over 2-km transmission.
