Abstract:
Solid state transformers using medium frequency transformers as a key component are a promising solution to minimize volume and weight of transformers and to offer additional functionalities. Therefore concepts using medium frequency transformers are discussed in particular in the fields of traction transformers, transformers for wind turbines and transformers for smart grids. This paper investigates the optimization of a multicell system of four medium frequency transformers regarding EMC and induced losses in a shield housing. A FEM model of a medium frequency transformer was developed. Based on this model, results for different transformer arrangements and variations of the current direction in some transformers are presented regarding their ability to ensure EMC and to improve energy efficiency and thereby reduce operational costs.
