Abstract:
This paper presents an investigation into ferrite core properties of 3-wire DC common mode chokes used for FM-band filtering. Starting with a selection of a prospective material based on impedance measurements using standard 42/26/18 toroidal cores, a size optimized 3-wire common-choke has been designed for a 4kW 48V/80A to 12V/230A unidirectional switch-mode power converter. This common-mode filter choke has been characterized for conducted emission suppression and especially for its FM-band performance in a broad frequency range from 100kHz up to 200MHz, based on mainly manufacturer specific automotive requirements. The performance is characterized for unsymmetric (common-mode), symmetric (differential-mode) and asymmetric (single-mode) signals under non-biased and DCbiased conditions. Conclusions are drawn for the proper design of high power common-mode filter chokes for automotive applications.
