Abstract:
Recent approaches of a personalized medicine affect various areas of modern therapeutic treatment. These foremost include the application of pharmaceuticals, surgical processes and private point-of-care solutions as well as steps of rehabilitation. Nevertheless, beside these already existing strategies the advancement of patient specific models for the training of clinical personal at the moment is rather insufficient. Those models are essential for the preparation of an individualized approach of medical care. The adaption of an established 3d printing technology for the processing of suitable biopolymers could be a potential solution to attend this problem. The focus of the presented work is on the development of a printing system utilizing collagen as a bioink. On that account, it is intended to design multiple extrusion heads adjusted to the various material parameters. At first, a set of experiments is performed with compositions of collagen to verify the fundamental mechanical characteristics in order to accomplish the required physiological properties of the final model. Thereby, the elasticity, force resistance and thermal stability as well as the haptic behaviour are of highest interest. Following, the obtained experimental results should be used to validate the extruder concepts and simulate the extrusion process itself. In case of a positive evaluation these concepts are implemented by using rapid prototyping technologies. Eventually, this novel 3d printer setup will be applied to generate first organic test structures based on collagen.
