The lack of identification possibility of the removable tools such as cutters in milling machines causes waste of cost and material during the production procedure. Currently available LF, HF and UHF RFID systems, due to their longer wavelengths, do not support the required readout performance of the RFID tags mounted on cutters. To overcome this problem an SHF RFID system is aimed to be developed. To achieve bulk reading of the tags, the ISO/IEC 18000-63 standard is adapted as much as possible during the development procedure. Regarding to the ISO/IEC 18000-63 standard, an ASK modulator is needed in the reader’s transmitter path of the RFID system. In this paper the theoretical consideration, test realizations and the measurement of different ASK modulator subsystems for SHF reader implementation are presented. The modulator techniques are chosen regarding to the requirements of a homodyne SHF RFID system and partially ISO/IEC 18000-63 standard. The paper consists of a theoretical utility analysis of different types of ASK modulator techniques such as passive mixer, the brief explanation of each modulator technique and the most critical experiment results. It closes with a conclusion and a suggestion for an implementation.
