Abstract:
The relevance of high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission technology has increased significantly during recent years. Cable systems are seen as key components within energy transmission technology. As a consequence, the number of HVDC cable installations have been continuously increasing. Field stress in HVDC cable insulation systems is dependent on the electrical conductivity of the used dielectrics and due to component design and operation, associated with non-linear effects. As conductivity is predominantly affected by temperature, enhancing the accuracy of a verified fully parametrised HVDC cable model is closely related to an accurate modelling of thermal relations. For this purpose, thermal cable modelling is highlighted and related temperature stresses are analysed. Besides theoretical considerations, further insights on thermal cable behaviour are achieved by performing full scale cable heat cycling tests. Obtained results are presented and related temperature profiles are analysed and integrated in the numerical simulation framework for HVDC cables.
