Abstract:
In many current wireless transmission systems, orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is employed as the default physical layer (PHY). However, new communication systems with extremely high data rates as well as ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) in the context of factory automation set up new challenges. Therefore, new communication systems might need to rely on alternative PHY solutions. One promising approach is parallel sequence spread spectrum (PSSS). Since PSSS offers flexibility in terms of bandwidth, data rate and resource distribution, a low latency or high data rate can be achieved. Even under critical channel conditions, it seems to be very robust. In this paper, we give an overview of current research concerning PSSS. Furthermore, we analyze the performance of a PSSS system with respect to system design aspects as well as its bit error performance in multipath channels.
