Abstract:
This work presents a novel planning approach accounting for inter-channel stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS) between DWDM signals in multi-band systems. We determine the impact of ISRS for multi-band transmission lines based on calculations of single-span characteristics. We define key metrics that can be analytically calculated and used further in network planning when assessing the performance of any given transmission line between two nodes of an optical network through the comparison of the received OSNR with a receiver threshold. Our approach is flexible enough for practical network applications. It allows calculating the per-channel power at the fiber output for a given input DWDM signal with different per-channel characteristics such as power, bit rate, and modulation format. We present simulation results demonstrating the application of our novel planning approach for several multi-band multi-span point-to-point transmission lines, representing a part of a mesh network with different span lengths and spectral utilization in each span.
