Abstract:
This paper analyzes the material composition of important drive train components specific to electric vehicles, i.e., inverter, electrical machine, and high voltage wiring. The components and their material composition are evaluated according to the following sustainability categories:  critical materials in terms of economic dependence  critical materials in terms of social or political impact  energy-intensive materials with exceptionally high carbon footprint and global warming potential  materials and components that cannot be easily recycled Based on this analysis, the impact of material selection on sustainability can be considered in future powertrain designs. So, the selection of materials, the optimization of designs, and the search for alternative materials can be targeted more effectively.
