Single Sided Axial Flux Machine with Flux Barriers

Abstract:
This paper presents the design of an axial flux machine with flux barriers. Those flux barriers have been widely investigated in radial flux machines and are used to improve the electromagnetic performance. With the design of the axial flux machine with flux barriers the applicability and beneficial use can be confirmed. Compared to a reference axial flux machine the one with flux barriers reveals a higher torque with the same volume of copper and permanent magnets. Conversely, this allows the saving of active materials and consequently costs to achieve the same torque as the reference machine. Besides the torque also the efficiency can be increased. Therefore, flux barriers present high potential for the industry in terms of economical and ecological aspects.
