Abstract:
Due to their advantageous combination of high performance, efficiency, speed capability, and mechanical robustness, Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) motors are the preferred choice for traction drives in electric vehicles. Modern IPM rotor topologies feature an increased number of individual permanent magnets, often embedded deeper within the rotor. These designs pose new challenges for the required magnetization technology. Post-assembly magnetization is gaining increasing importance in this context. It is supported by improved simulation tools and innovative approaches such as thermal-assisted magnetization and combined outer and inner magnetization techniques. This paper presents various practical solutions for the magnetization of complex rotor topologies.
