Abstract:
This paper evaluates the use of embedded permanent magnets in an outer rotor drive for an electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL). The aim is to reduce the overall size of the drive while maintaining the same torque. For this purpose, three different rotor pole configurations are compared. A rotor with surface mounted magnets is used as a reference model and compared with a V-arrangement of embedded magnets. A V-arrangement with iron bridges (V-PMSM) and an innovative bridgeless design (SEG-PMSM) are presented and analyzed. To evaluate the torque density and the required mass of the permanent magnets, an analytical model is created. Based on these results, two prototypes with
