Abstract:
We consider a mobile user in an environment characterized by a cellular network with whole coverage and isolated Wireless-LAN (WLAN) access points. Downloading a file from the Internet, the user is often confronted with the need to come to a decision whether to handover from the cellular system to a WLAN access point. For off-the-shelf Mobile-IP configurations we show that the overall performance of a handover to WLAN and back depends on two main parameters only. Estimating these parameters at entering the WLAN coverage lets us derive a handover decision based on the overall performance seen by the user. We show in simulation that this handover algorithm performs well in differentiating between beneficial and decremental handovers.
